Please send in your comments on the 1999 Miss Teen USA Pageant to beauty_pageant99@hotmail.com. I would love to know what you thought of the show.

Host: Carson Daly did a EXCELLENT job. Great MC skills.

Co-Hosts: Julie Moran & Ali Landry did better than last year. Though, I didn't like the comment that Julie made (Maryland looks like she should be on top of a wedding cake). Otherwise good job both of you.

Special Musical Guests: 'NSYNC, I really didn't like the songs they performed. Otherwise, they did a great job if the pageant was a concert.

Special Guest: Britney Spears, I am confused. Was she actually at the pageant? Her "Britney's Beat" was OK. I liked how she showed the different high points of Shreveport.

Miss Teen USA Judges:

Colin, Coolio, Dee Dee Roper, Elizabeth Crow, Eric Lively, Jordan Knight, Kimberly Kirberger and Tisha Venturini.

I really like how the judges scored the semi-finalists. They picked the most deserving delegate for the 1999 crown.

Opening Number:

The opening number was great. The Miss Universe Organization really made the pageant for teens. The opening number was filled with glamour an suspense. Very entertaining. One of the best opening numbers in Miss Teen USA History.

From 51 to just 10 extrodinary Teens:

After all the high energy in the opening number, I was nervous and excited about the official announcement of the top 10. Unfortuantly, I didn't do to well.

Official Miss Teen USA Top 10:

(Last time State made it into the Semi-Finals)

Nevada, Kristen Walters, 18 (1998, 2nd Runner Up)
Tennesseee, Rachel Boston, 17 (1998, 1st Runner Up)
Virginia, Kristi L. Glakas, 18 (1998, Finalist)
Kentucky, Lexie Kemper, 17 (1995, Semi-Finalist)
Texas, Misty Giles, 18 (1998, Semi-Finalist)
Michigan, Sara Marie Dusendang, 18 (1996, Semi-Finalist)
Louisiana, Sarah Thornhill, 18 (1994, Semi-Finalist)
Maryland, Khosi Roy, 17 (1996, Finalist)
Delaware, Ashley M. Coleman, 18 (1995, Finalist)
Arizona, Danielle Demski, 17 (1996, Finalist)

The Top 10 were amazing. I was hoping for Maryland and Colorado. This breaks the 2 year streak for Illinois and Colorado making the semi-finals. Unfortunantly, Montana and Nebraska didn't not make the top 10. That keeps there streak for no semi-finalists in Miss Teen USA History. I only got 4 (40%) of the official Miss Teen USA Delegates.

Let the Games Begin:

TQL? Interview Competition:
The format was the same used for last years Sound Bytes. The questions were better and funnier. Maryland blew the other 9 delegates away with her score. I knew that she was going to be a strong contender from the start. To my Surprise, Delaware was going to be the contender. I think that Texas was just a little too mature. Here is how the delegates ranked after round 1.

1. Maryland, 9.76
2. Delaware, 9.73
3. Michigan, 9.57
4. Kentucky, 9.44
5. Louisiana, 9.32
6. Arizona, 9.22
7. Texas, 9.17
8. Nevada, 9.09
9. Virginia, 9.06
10. Tennessee, 8.96

Sunset Beach Swimsuit Competition:

The swimsuit competition was good. Though, again it was like a concert with 'NSYNC in the background singing. One things for sure, the girls look better on TV than in pictures. Though, I found it unappeling that the ribs of Tennessee and Arizona could be seen. Kentucky and Delaware looked the best in swimsuits. Here are the swimsuit rankings.

1. Delaware, 9.65
2. Maryland, 9.58
3. Louisiana, 9.51
4. Texas, 9.48
5. Michigan, 9.46
6. Arizona, 9.45
7. Tennessee, 9.39
8. Virginia, 9.36
9. Kentucky, 9.28
10. Nevada, 9.21

Receving the highest score Ashley M. Coleman, 18 of Delaware won a $2500 scholorship.

Evening Gown Competition:

I really liked how they showed the other 41 Delegates Gowns while showing off 'NSYNC. Very beautiful gowns this year. Tennessee's looked 100% better on TV. Virginia's gown was a little too much. I am not going to lie, I hated Delaware's gown. But she wears it very princess like and it fits her very well. Maryland's dress was too big, but Julie Moran made a comment that was very rude about her dress. Something like, Maryland looks like she should be on a wedding cake.

1. Delaware, 9.77
2. Michigan, 9.73
3. Arizona, 9.68
4. Kentucky, 9.58
5. Louisiana, 9.50
6. Maryland, 9.47
7. Texas, 9.45
7. Tennessee, 9.45
9. Nevada, 9.41
10. Virginia, 9.34

With Semi-Finals now over, only 5 girls went own to compete for the crown. Kentucky gave it her best shot, and takes home the title of Miss Photogecic. I really liked Nevada, she was simple. Texas was too mature for the pageant. Though, I didn't like Virginia, she was a great joy in the top 10 and I liked her hair. Tennessee went in and did her best. Congratulations to the 5 of you.

Finalists:

Michigan, Sara Marie Dusendang, 18
Maryland, Khosi Roy, 17
Arizona, Danielle Demski, 17
Delaware, Ashley M. Coleman, 18
Louisiana, Sarah Thornhill, 18

Very good top 5. Now the delegates went on to another round called "Ripped from the Headlines". Though during Maryland's interview she mistakenly said the word circumcise, she did a great job. As for Delaware, the Miss Teen USA title was pointed in her direction. Michigan and Arizona said good bye here as 3 lucky teens go for the crown.

Special Miss Teen USA Awards:

Miss Photogenic: Lexie Kemper, 17, Kentucky
Teen with Style Award: Morgan O'Murray, 18, Colorado
Miss Congeniality: Morgan Maholick, 17, New York
Make Every Wish Come True Essay Award: Kristi L. Glakas, 18, Virginia

Final 3:

Delaware, Ashley M. Coleman, 18
Louisiana, Sarah Thornhill, 18
Maryland, Khosi Roy, 17

These 3 went on to answer the final question. The question was about a soccer player who posed nude with only a soccer ball covering in the right spot. Delaware answered the best. Maryland was too nervous and Louisiana did OK.

Crowning Momments of a lifetime:

Vannessa Minnillo took her final walk which really touched my heart. She was such a good role model and she was crying. Special Moment of th pageant.

2nd Runner up: Maryland, Khosi Roy, 17

1st Runner up: Louisiana, Sarah Thornhill, 18

Miss Teen USA 1999: Delaware, Ashley M. Coleman, 18

Congratulations to Miss Teen USA 1999, Ashely M. Coleman. I do not think that Maryland deserved 2nd runner up, she should have been 1st runner up. But, this was an outstanding competition. Congratulations to all the young ladies who participated.

Miss Teen USA 1999 Viewer Comments:

Marshall Smith: The pageant was great! Very entertaining and lots of glamour. I thought all of the finalists were lovely young women. I was cheering for Miss Tennessee who represented my beloved home state. I loved the hairstyle she wore during the pageant.

Henrique: Well, regarding the winner, she is cute and everything, a nice representative for teenagers; however, I would not have picked her in a million years. Out of the 10, I was surprised and impressed by Texas. Arizona was very elegant, Maryland had the brains and communication skills, and Virginia was a cutie. I just hope they will not forget that beauty is important in a beauty pageant. I don't want the Miss Universe system to become something close to what Miss America is... Looks DO count!

ActressCYE: I am very annoyed at Ali Landry and Julie Moran. I agree that they did do better this year... but what are these girls supposed to look back on? The negative feedback that they give. I really didn't like it when they were laughing hysterically about Maryland's word that she stumbled on. The fact was that she corrected her mistake ... there was nothing more to laugh about. Then talking about her dress was unnecessary. These girls put their hearts into competition, and their negative feedback on national television isn't exciting. I just wish they could say other things. Carson Daly was awesome compared to what happened last year. Overall it was a great pageant.

Behn7: I placed Virginia in my top 10 from before the delegates arrived. I was so happy to see her in the top 10 she had such a go lucky spirit and not only did she make it to top 10 but she came and took the essay award!!! Good for her, she deserved it and she just had soooo much fun you could tell. I hope she competes for Miss Virginia USA. Virginia is now one of the strongest states in the Miss Teen USA Pageant.

Cynde Sikes Flanagan: I spend a great deal of time watching pageants. My mother entered me in pageants when I was very young. I won and served as Little Miss Shreveport, La. when I was 5 years old. I did not start watching the pageant last night until after the 10 semi-finalist were named. My comments on Ali and Julie, I was very upset to hear some of the things they were saying. Their comments during the evening gown competition were very rude. They were voicing personal opinions about the gowns that the contestants were wearing. The specific comments that I would like to address were "the jacket looks like a blanket/quilt" (Ms. Delaware) and "looks like she belongs on the top of a wedding cake" (Ms. Maryland). Now, one might think that the "wedding cake" comment was a compliment - I think it could have been viewed negative as well as positive. The comment about "looks like a blanket/quilt" was tacky and totally uncalled for. When the question and answer part of the program came up they were laughing and making digs about the incorrect use of the word "circumcise" by one of the contestants. All through the pageant they seemed to take great pleasure in laughing and making tacky comments about the contestants. It's a good thing that the contestants can't here those comments. Talk about devastating to your self confidence and self esteem! I think, in the future, if these ladies are to continue doing pageant commentary they need to refrain from the personal attacks on the contestants and stick to the real job at hand. I personally would closely examine my decision to have them do another pageant. I otherwise enjoyed the pageant very much. Ms. Spears was an added delight to the program. I was very impressed with Ms. Delaware and pleased to see that she will be wearing the crown.

Lori: I am 40 years old and have watched all pageants for many years. I always look forward to watching them and then I get very disappointed. I cannot figure out how the judging is done. It seems that the judges pick one girl right from the start and are blinded for the rest of the pageant. I believe that this is very unfair to all the contestants. For each category the contestants are marked with a point system, I've watched girls who have answered questions with problems and then their are other girls whom have answered with no problems and then the girl whom answered with the problem gets marked higher. This really confuses me and also makes me angry. In most of the cases it is the girl that the judges have basically picked right from the start. So my question to you is why have the point system? As a pageant watcher I would like to see the judging done by your viewers. This way you won't have picked judges who I feel sometimes are not qualified to judge. I feel that if you had your viewers judging that each and every contestant that has come out to participate would have a fair chance. I believe that when you have billions of viewers judging and the results end up with one girl, then this is the right girl. So many times in the past and I do believe I will see it again in the future that the judging is favored and unfair. I know you will probably not agree with me on this, but rest assure that if you were to take a poll on this matter you would find allot of viewers out there would feel the same way as I. I want to keep watching pageants and if something is not done about the judging I know I will and I'm sure allot more viewers will get discouraged and will stop watching. This would be a very sad day for me and for your pageants. I also think that there should be more time spent on showing all the girls and less time spent on showing the viewers the City that the pageant is being held at. After all this is a beauty pageant not a site seeing event.

Eva M. Ozi: Personally I wanted Miss Maryland to win. I thought she was charming and very intelligent. But I'll admit that I hated her choice of evening gown. Miss Delaware was cute. But I don't know how fair it is that she won just because she is cute.

Charles King: In any case, Delaware was in my original top ten and I too only got four out of ten. However, Ashley (in my opinion) had it won the minute the camera was on her. she had the most incredibly sweet and sincere smile. She was extremely confident and very sure of herself without being cocky and her eyes just lit the Hirsch Coliseum. Although she did not deserve to win either swimsuit of evening gown, she wore each with such confidence that I wasn't surprised that the judges favored her. More than anything else, she's just a teen and it showed! Just a little bit of trivia for you: Last night marked only the 2nd time in 17 years that Delaware made the top ten. as a matter of fact, I don't think Delaware has ever made top ten or semifinals in any of the other major national pageants. After reviewing my tape again tonight, I have to give Carson Daly some props. He was actually one of the best first time hosts in recent memory. I think Mario had more energy last year, but Carson held his own. I like Ali and Julie. Some of their comments can be a bit much sometimes, but I don't see what the fuss is all about. Their job is to provide color commentary and they do that pretty well. I thought the production was one the best in years. In particular, I love the opening production number and the song performed during the crowning and walk. Personally, I love N'Sync, but they were a big distraction -- more so this year than last.

NikiJosef:Carson Daly was the perfect host for the evening. Ali and Julie were the usual catty women they were just plain rude. The jugdes knew who they wanted to win from the very start. They were judging fairly until the evening gown competition. There were other girls who deserved higher points . Miss Delaware was cute and looks really young but Miss Louisiana was very pretty and very poised. I think they should stop calling this a beauty pageant since they are putting more emphasis on their brains than looks. I must say that these young girls did very well on their ability to answer all the questions. Like the Miss Universe and the Miss USA the first runner-up was a lot prettier than the actual winner. I still go for the girls who have looks, style and poise. It is always visual pleasure to see girls with a certain aura or maybe that certain X-factor. Congratulations to this Years first runner-ups .

Kozlowski, Michael: I enjoyed the show but was very disappointed to see that Miss Wyoming and Miss Montana were overlooked in the Top 10. I realize choices are based largely on personal opinion but I felt that these girls, particularly Miss Wyoming, emulated an enormous amount of natural beauty that I am surprised no one else noticed. I don't understand what was so captivating about Miss Virginia to put her in the finals. She was cute but didn't hold a candle to the girls mentioned above. I was particularly unimpressed by the women judges and all of their unprofessional comments. They were speaking about very young, impressionable girls who are already self-conscious and insecure at this age. They should have been more sensitive to that instead of using it as an opportunity to criticize. I certainly hope the girls mentioned above got noticed by modeling agencies, if nothing else. When you've got it, you've got it, and they do!

MBrown2318: After attending this pageant and hearing the names of the top 10 called, I was pleased when Miss Delaware was announced as the winner. No, she was not the prettiest girl there, infact, most of the pretty ones did not even make the top ten and I personally did not have her in my top 10 either. The audience was very surprised. But what did happen is that a true teenager took home the title. Sometimes many of us forget that this is what the Miss Teen USA program is looking for. They don't want "big" hair and lots of make-up. This young women follows in the footsteps of Vanessa Minillo and it would be wise for all those interested in competing in the program to remember what the system is looking for. It is the best teen system out there for young women today. It offers more than all of the others and the only thing that the program expect from it's contestants is that they just be themselves. And isn't that a good thing!
