Elephant Island is located immediately to the north of the Antarctic Peninsula which is the furthest extension of the continent from the South Pole. The Island is 670 miles southeast of Cape Horn. In 1916, following the sinking of the British vessel Endurance, Ernest Shackleton left 22 men on this desolate island and set off on one of Antarctica's most dramatic rescue voyages. All members of the party survived.
