Titanic was the biggest ship in the world for her day. At 882 1/2 feet long
and a total height from keel to navigating bridge was 104 feet.
The Titanic was built in the Harland and Wolf shipyards in Belfast Ireland for the White
Star line. It was launched on May 31, 1911 with tens of thousands of people
watching the great ship go down the slip way. The ship was then "fitted out"
which means all the boilers and furnature was set up onboard. this took ten months
to do.
The massive engines that were to propell the Titanic were steampowered.
There were 29 boilers that heat the water to make steam. There were 159 furnacies.
The Titanic carried 5892 tons of coal. At a cruising speed of 21 to 22knots it used
620 to 640 tons a day. There was three propellers. The two three bladed side
propellers were each 231/2 feet (7m) across and weighed 38 tons each.
The four bladed center propeller was 161/2 feet (5m) across and weighed 22 tons.
There were four funnels on the ship. Three served as a smoke escape for the
boilers and one was a fake for ventellation.
Titanic's sea trials went well. They did turns at differant speeds and stopped at differant speeds. The trials were very brief.
Sailing day came very fast and everbody was very exited. A single First class ticket averaged $430. The two delux parler
suites cost $3300.(todays money) Third class cost $35.

to Cherbourg.Next stop was Queenstown,Ireland.
Titanic was now steaming away from Ireland heading for New York . The Captain said "Lets stretch her legs"
(full speed) although he wanted the Titanic to go full ahead Titanic did not do full speed because the
last 4 boilers were not lit. First officer William Merdoch Came back and said" 21 knots sir".

APRIL 14 1912 SUNDAY THE NIGHT OF THE SINKING.
That night at about 10:30pm the Captain and Second Officer Lighttoller where discusing the conditions
they said (Sec off Lighttoler) "I dont think i've ever seen such a flat calm" (Captain) Like a millpond. Ok
I'm off keep heading in the same direction and maintain speed".
At 11:40 one of the lookouts named Fredrick fleet saw a dark shadow up ahead and he rung the Brass bell
three times and picked up the phone and waited. The phone rang and Fourth officer Boxhell picked it
up and said "what do you see" fleet answered "Iceberg right a head".
First officer Murdoch said "Hard a Starboard" then he moved the ships telegraph machine to Full astern.
then ship kept going streight ahead then it started to inch to port and then it hit scraping along 300 feet.
Thomas Andrews the desinger came to the bridge and told the captain that 6 compartments were flooding and the titanic was going to sink in an hour or so.
The captain ordered the lifeboats to be uncovered and for people to get in and leave the ship. There was a strict rule for only women and children first. After a while the ship had a steep angle to the bow (front) of the ship and the passengers were getting more paniced by the minute. The ship sliped beneath the waves and all that was left was the lifeboats bobbing around in the North Atlantic ocean. 1500 people died on that faitfull night. The carpathia came to the rescue and saved all the 750 people on the lifeboats.
There was a big inquirary into the disaster.
