RABBI YISROEL LANDAU

He is famous for the series of books titled: "CHOK L'YISROEL" that offers deep insight into the 613 mitzvot. Died on the 1st day of Rosh Hashana 1829. He was married twice, due to having been divorced. The circumstances that led to that situation was mentioned by Noda B'Yehuda himself. Yisroel was offered a prestigious rabbinical position in a place where his wife felt there would be less religious influence. She was concerned that it would affect the children. The result was that they divorced. His two sons did have some relationship with their grandfather, the Noda B'Yehuda. Reference is made to a specific visit that the two boys had with their grandfather when one of them was about to have his Bar Mitzvah. They were received by him with great warmth.

Born: 1758

Died: 1829 in Prague. Buried next to his second wife, Serel under a twin headstone in the Fiberchova cemetery.

Father: Rabbi Yechezkel Landau, known as the Noda B'Yehuda.

Mother: Libe. Died 1789 Prague, on the 12th day in Teves. Buried next to her husband, the Noda B'Yehuda in the Fiberchova cemetery. Her father's name was Jacobke.

SPOUSE 1:

SHPRINTZA TOVA FRANKEL - Her father was Av Bais Din in Stashuv. She was divorced from Yisroel Landau.

CHILDREN:

1)ELIEZER - Born 1778. Died 1831 Brodt (Brody), Tammuz as a result of cholera. Married Chaya Hinda Rappaport. Her father was R' Mordechai Yarish of Lvov. Eliezer and Chaya Hinda had a son:

JUDAH LEIB LANDAU - He had two children:

DAUGHTER - married to individual with surname of Horowitz

2) YEHOSHUA - He was av Bais Din in Alkosh

SPOUSE 2:

SEREL - Died 1833 Prague, on the 2nd day of Rosh Hashana. She was the daughter of R' Boruch Bendet Segal Doshnis, Av Bais Din in Naimegen, Holland. R' Boruch died 1803, on the 15th day of Elul.

CHILDREN:

1) MOSHE - Born 1789, 27th of Teves. Died 1852, on the 15th day of Iyur. Author of: "Marpe Lashon" "Merci Lashon" "Moreh L'Ziddoka." Married to Rivka. She was the daughter of R' Shlomo Kave of Prague. She died 1859 Prague, on the 27th day of Adar I.

2) LIBE - Died 1800 Prague, on the 17th day of Tishrei

3) A SON - Died 1800 Prague, on the 17th day of Teves
